Hello everyone!

I am new here and want to introduce myself. I had a vsg in 2009 and lost 114lbs. I went from a bmi of 36 to 22 and I thought I had finally beat obesity.

over the last 7+ years I've moved all over the country for work, ran 7 half marathons and a full marathon, bought a house by myself, developed fibromyalgia, and became a crippling insomniac do to shift work. The weight crept on slowly. I had to eat more carbs to fuel my marathon training in 2012 and it never fell off. I still eat clean (maintain a strict gluten free lifestyle) and I'm still active than most people.

I feel like I woke up one day with a bmi of 35 and had no idea how I ended up in this fat suit. I am embarrassed to say that I failed.

So im considering a revision to a duodenal switch. However, I have a bmi of 35 with pcos, depression and insomnia. Any lightweights have issues with getting your ds covered by insurance? I have harvard pilgrim insurance.

I also was told by an obesity specialist that because I was so successful with my sleeve initially that if I had gastric bypass I likely would only lose 20-30 lbs. why would I go through all the pain of another surgery just to lost 30 lbs? How would my body react to a ds then?

anyone else have a similar story? Any advice of words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

thanks for reading!

The sleeve is just another diet with a smaller stomach. Do diets work long term??? We are now seeing people with sleeves practically every day wanting to revise to the DS. Makes sense, you already have half of it anyway. RNY(gastric bypass) also has pretty dismal long term results. And a whole host of other ugly issues and restrictions.

Sounds to me like you did everything humanly possible to be successful with the sleeve. And it failed you. There is no better option for you than the DS. It's the best of what's out there today.

The first thing you need to do is get a copy of your EOC from your insurance company and read it! Then you will know. Remember, the insurance company is not your friend and they want to discourage you to the point where you will just go away. It's also insurance changing time. You may have other options right now that you won't have later.

Lots of lower BMI people have had the DS. And they are just fine. Just make sure you get a real DS from an experienced surgeon.

Welcome to the forum!

I don't have a totally similar situation, however, Just wanted to say HI and tell you that you are not a failure. I felt the same way, and have many days where I mentally beat myself up about it. Iwill be going in for an open DS within the next 2 weeks. I've had a lapband, a lapband erosion into my stomach with a fistula at the port, a lapband removal, a sleeve that actually isn't a sleeve (very long story), and now going for a full DS by Dr. K.. I am looking forward to feeling normal and healthy soon.

The best to you!
