Hello there. I'm new to this site but not to weight loss surgery. I had the VSG in May of 2011, and here I am, in 2019, almost back at my starting weight. I finally (with shame) consulted my surgery, and miraculously, I've been approved for the DS! So I'm gearing up for WLS again. The number one fact I've learned is THE WEIGHT CAN COME BACK. I am so grateful for this second chance, and I hope I can get the support I need to succeed this time.

Welcome! There's no need for shame. Some of us are just efficient, and you can't always fight genes. I always said our poeple were the rock stars of famine or hunter / gatherer times. The DS will give you the edge you need.

Hi and welcome ADillon81 ! Glad you will get the DS - most of us who really struggle with weight wouldn't succeed with VSG - it's just another diet with a smaller stomach. Your surgery failed you for the reason that most diets fail. Restriction alone isn't enough! We need the malabsorption. Looking forward to following your journey. Please read up on DS nutrition and vitamin supplementation while you prepare for the procedure. All the best!

Welcome! You’ve come to the right place. I was so afraid of being the one person the DS didn’t work for, but it did, and continues to. BTW, feeling it won’t work for you is shared by most people contemplating/waiting on surgery day.

It took so long for me to go because I was so ashamed, but now I see that I'm not alone in this journey. I'm just praying I get it right this time. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much. I self paid for my VSG and couldn't afford the DS back in 2011. Plus I heard so much negativity about it that I didn't bother to read up for myself. Now my insurance will pay, so I'm trying to gather as many FACTS about this surgery as I can. Thanks for the tips. I will definitely do my reading. Also, did I see that you had surgery in New Orleans? I'm from Louisiana.

Hi Susan, That's totally my fear. Since my VSG failed (or I failed it), I'm afraid I might fall back into the same bad habits with the DS. Thanks so much for the reassurance and confidence. I really need it!

Hi again! I didn't realize you were in Louisiana (I thought LA was Los Angeles - silly me!). There the closest DS surgeons to you that folks here would recommend would be Dr. Ayoola in Denton, TX, or Dr. Boyce in Tenn. If anyone else has a closer suggestion I hope they will chime in. You need to be very careful not to end up with a surgeon doing SIPS/aka SADI/aka loop DS and calling it the DS, or a modified DS, or some other name. It's not the same thing, and it's not a standard of care bariatric operation, but there are surgeons out there doing it and claiming it's just as good. Long term results are not known, and in addition, they get insurance to pay for it by coding it as a DS, when in reality it doesn't fit the wording of the code for the DS. Ask lots of questions and be very careful!
You can find other threads here about this issue with lots more info.
