Nausea post op

I had my DS on Dec 17th, so fairly recently. Since this past Friday I’ve been having nausea with everything I eat. Friday night I barfed up my dinner but once empty I felt fine. I have restarted Nexium like the hospital gave me at discharge and they’ve also recommended I start taking Dramamine. I started a probiotic last night. Is there something else I should be doing for the nausea? Is this something that time will fix?

Regarding hydration, how do you know as a DSer when you’re dehydrated? My urine is a pale yellow but I’m not urinating as frequently as I was prior to surgery. I don’t feel dehydrated meaning no headaches, and no cracked lips.

I appreciate all the help here!

If you aren't managing 64 oz of fluid every day, you likely are dehydrated. Which causes nausea, which makes you more dehydrated which causes more nausea. You most likely need fluids, either an Urgent Care who can handle that or the ER.

Try different fluids. Different temps.

Agree with southernlady, and would add that probiotics are great but won't help with nausea. Try backing down to liquid diet, different liquids at different temps, sip slowly, small amounts frequently, and stop immediately if you feel even a hint of fullness. Signals of fullness are different post-op and you will learn to recognize them.

I will say I had to change to Zantac 150 to control my heartburn, the Nexxium wasn't quite doing it for me (granted I only tried opeing the capsule and throwing the powder down my throat once, after that I just took the capsules).

Loretta, do you have any chicken flavor Unjury? Salt is really good for nausea. If you don't have that, try chicken bouillion. Even licking a bouillion cube can stop the nausea.

I second going back on liquids. Drink your protein. Take it easy.

Contact your surgeon. Vomiting can also be a sign of infection and leak. As others have said you may need to go to emergency. Get in touch with your surgeon.

I went to a facility that does IV vitamin therapies inside a doctors office and received 1.5 liters of rehydration fluids. There was a little Vitamin C and Bs thrown in for good measure. And some Zofran. I hate needles so I had to be really feeling poorly to go. The nurse was great and she found a good vein on the first stick, thankfully. A nice dr even came to check on me. The nausea is not 100% gone but it is much better and I’ve been sipping water and tea all afternoon. I will go back next week if needed again, but I am hoping this will give me a jumpstart to get more liquids/beverages in me.

So glad you went!!! Now, DRINK your protein, please?

Sheanie, no promises but I’ll try my protein drink again tomorrow, it tastes very repulsive to me at the moment.

Some of the protein shakes I liked pre-op were nasty tasting to me post-op so I found other shakes to drink. I bought new ones at stores that had reasonable return policies in case some of them were also intolerable.

I concur, stick with whey protein isolate as it is highly bioavailable, absorbs quickly, and is virtually lactose free so less chance of causing GI distress.

For what it's worth, Unjury chicken soup is a lot more palatable than the chicken broths I've tried. My plan is to keep a few packets on hand to fill the niche of chicken noodle soup if I'm feeling bad.

The protein drinks are still a no-go but so far today I’ve been able to drink more liquids and on the protein front I’ve had some milk and Jif peanut butter. I’m actually surprised that I ate a couple baby carrots with peanut butter and that went down pretty well. I’m currently nursing a blue Gatorade like they gave us in the hospital and 2 bottles of water.
