Just an informal poll:

1. How much did you regain from your lowest weight?
2. How far out were you when the regain started?
3. How far out were you when the regain more or less came to an end?

I have played with the same 50lbs or so for years. I was about a year out when the regain started and I don't think it will end until I croak. It's the same old diet cycle. But I am not an average DSer at all and my results are not normal.

Wow, this post unleashed a myriad of thoughts. First, I thought, wow, I'd be really pissed if I yoyoed 50 pounds after cutting my body apart because I so like being a little thing for the first time in my life (though my BMI is still 23 to 24) and skinny jeans are so awesome. Then, I thought, wait a min. I weight 135ish and my diabetes is gone and I would have been so happy at 185 and no diabetes and still thankful every day for the DS. Munchkin, I hope you get to weigh you want to be one day and it's easy to keep off, but I'm happy you are healthy and wishing you the very best.

As for the regain, I'm just 23 months out, so I'm not sure what will happen. I did bounce up about 5 pounds at month 19 and took it off. But, I assume I will struggle a bit in the next year. I don't want to weight above 140.

I don't eat enough to really weight much more than I do I suspect. I eat about 1200 calories a day. If I eat more fat, which some days I do, it goes right through me. I never eat more than 400 calories of carbs a day.

Thanks! I am healthy like horse. And no deficiencies ever. Part of me thinks you NEED deficiencies to be a successful DSer.

I’ll be 15 years out on Sunday.

Start: Around 290
1 year out: 205
3.3 years out: started a slow decline to 170 by 6 years out (for a minute).
A little after 6 years out I had the first of what was supposed to be 3 reconstructive surgeries (arms and lower face) and had horrible psychiatric side effects (panic attacks, suicidal ideation and depression) from the Reglan I was given post-op; was put on Celexa and within a few months I was back to 205.
Stayed at 205 +/- 5lbs for a long time.
Around 12 years out, started very slowly losing again.
I’m at about 175 now and just had a second reconstructive surgery (abdominoplasty).

I was on the verge of high blood pressure, elevated fasting blood sugar, and I was on a statin for elevated triglycerides and CRP. I never developed diabetes, I’ve been off statins for almost 15 years, and my normal blood pressure (eating a metric buttload of salt) is about 95/59.

I will be 65 in August, and I’m a size 10-12; my excess skin on ass and thighs will not go away by themselves, I’m big boned, and while I’d be thrilled if I drifted down to 150 without having to cut back on carbs, that’s not going to happen. And I don’t care.

BTW, I'm asking because I have really been packing it on lately.

Surgery was 2 yrs, 8 months ago.
I bottomed at 223 after only 9 months and have slowly regained since (but not too bad).
BUT in the last 4 months, I've gone from 228 to 240!

So I'm wondering when the regain stopped for most of you?

My eating habits haven't really changed since getting the DS. I get plenty of protein, but I also admit that I'm a carboholic. Everyone says the great thing about a DS is that you don't have to be on a diet, but I'm starting to wonder about that.

And, more importantly, when/if this regain will stop!

This is REALLY a case where the general feedback you get won't apply directly to you. The best that can be said is "expect a bit of bounceback" and "don't let it get out of control."

You may recall that last year, having hit a low of 167 for a few days, I discovered my beloved Sugar Smacks from childhood (now reincarnated as Honey Smacks) were still available - a fact I had diligently ignored since I stopped eating sugar cereal when I started to get fat as a teen. I bought some. And about 8-10 boxes and 8 weeks later, I had gained about 10 lbs from my low. I had to cut that shit right out. I don't even walk down the cereal aisle in the supermarket anymore. (Although since there was a recent recall of Honey Smacks for having sickened hundreds of people with salmonella, I might have lost more weight that way ...)

I understand everyone is a little different, but I would still like to hear from some people.

Too bad about the Sugar Smacks. If could have consistently shunned carbs I wouldn't have needed surgery in the first place!

I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but those Honey Smacks are aptly named - in a bowl of full fat milk, or right out of the box.

Wow, I'm sorry about this. I'm far from a veteran on the DS, but I do go to Dr Rabkins group every month and talk to people very month with the DS People say you don't have to diet anymore but they all say, you have to be careful and watch what you eat.

I still count calories for the most part. I just don't count the fat calories, but I do on the Carbs and protein and that seems to work for me.

I don't think anyone thinks you get a free pass on eatting, you just have a tool now that makes it easier to watch what you eat.

I'm sorry about the regain, that does sux.

I don't think that is true at all. You do not have to "diet" but eat in moderation. With any type of bariatric surgery, you have to make changes in diet and lifestyle to maintain weight loss. It is just easier with the DS because you have the malabsorption component. When I had the RNY I used to read "bounce back is normal" and I never did anything to stop the regain. Consequently, I just kept regaining. I'm not buying into the bounce back is normal with the DS this time. This is my second WLS and things have to be different. Instead, I am weighing myself weekly and if the scale goes up I cut back on carbs. You can cut back on carbs. You can do anything you tell yourself.

One of my personal peeves is referring to the DS as a "tool". Even the ASMBS uses quotation marks around the word tool. I know it's only semantics and if it helps anyone to think of their surgery as a tool, more power to them. I don't think of my titanium knee or my thyroid replacement therapy as a tools. Tools were used to bring about the treatment I underwent.

:soapbox:, jumping off now and back to the original question. I honestly have lost track of the timeline of my gains and losses. I did get down to 144 lbs. once and was miserable. Not because of the loss, but what was causing it. I'm not a doctor and have no real explanation. When I had the Kidney Stone From Hell, I experienced my low of 144#. (The culprit stone was about the size of a nickel and shaped like an arrow head. It took two treatments of stone blasting to get rid of it.) Now I hover between 155 and 165 depending on carb consumption. I probably eat more carbs than is recommended, but I refuse to get my knickers in a knot.

Eh....we can agree to disagree on this. The DS gives me enough control over food that along with exercise and careful planning I can maintain my weight. For me, it's a tool. I needed the "treatment" to get the tool. Your thyroid replacement is a treatement. You take it and you don't need to do anything else. Not true with the DS. Just my two cents
