Not liking iron trend

My endo is fine with these numbers, but the ferritin has trended straight down the last few years. I'm tired. I'm certain I've read other posts about iron enough times I should know, but how low do things have to dip to get an endo to agree it's low iron making you feel like a slug?

I'd start working on getting a referral to a hematologist who works with bariatric patients now. It's not seriously low, but getting there. If you haven't done a trial of oral iron supplements yet, I would start doing that immediately, if they need to see that you don't absorb it properly. At least that's what I had to do.

I've taken carbonyl, then polysacharide which used to keep my numbers up, but not now. I'll order some proferrin today.

I hadn't read about snapping it half before, but it seems to make sense, and I've done it with other vitamins to improve absorption (if they aren't something time released).

At $50 a month I guess I'd better do everything to ensure that they work. (They easily snap in half without a pill cutter.)

I just refer myself to a hematologist. I educate them on the DS. Because chemo often does a number on iron, they have LOTS OF PATIENTS who need iron infusions...it's a "regular thing" for them...and I'm just another infusion patient.

To other doctors, infusions are a big deal.

I'd say save your money, get into see a hematologist ASAP and get an infusion. I had to get one a month out from surgery. I am 20 weeks out and feel like crap again. I'm having an iron panel done tomorrow. The moral of the story is not everyone responds to oral iron no matter what form it's in. You might be one of them but you won't know until you see a hematologist. Good luck!

Agree with infusions. I had no trouble getting them. Just tell you've tried oral as recommend and it hasn't raised your levels. They can't know what you've taken or not. You can also tell them that iron is painfully constipating you. Again, they just have to take your word.

In general, iron infusions are no big deal for them.

And for you, they'd be great. No more pills (or their expense) to separate from other pills, food, etc.

In my case, one infusion took me from just below range to way above it. It's just two hours sitting in a comfy recliner, reading a book. Can't beat it! I went nine months before I needed my next one.
