Doing well right now...I think.

Hey all,

Finally "turned the corner" so to speak. Doing relatively well right now, 60-90g protein/day most of it is in the form of premier protein shakes (taste buds are finally back to normal) and Rabkin wants me to be eating 80 g/day right now...I can't eat a whole lot, a saucer plate is too much, and ground beef/ground chicken hurt. They feel like rocks in my stomach. I've done chicken and steak with no problem, but it's only been a few bites, nowhere near enough to get 80g from food alone. Prilosec isn't helping me either. I'm at 80g (4 pills/day) and no help at all. I also do not get hungry right now and that's completely understandable, I knew it was part of the DS early out.
Also, another quick question- so if I drink water w/out drinking protein first, my stomach feels like it turns inside out...any idea why?

I don't have a lot of answers to your questions, but what happened to me is it really took 6 month for my body to adjust and no matter how much I wanted eating to be somewhat normal, it still took 7 months for everything to work itself out.

Try some tuna salad with lots of mayo. Most people do well with that and it's lots of protein. If you can't do meals...don't. Make up the tuna and eat a bite every time you pass the fridge.

Get with your doc on the Prilosec. It does not work for everyone. At 80 mgs, it's obvious that you are in that crowd.

You are doing good on the rest. If you need to have protein before water, go for it. Also eat less, more often. Honestly eating often is the only way I still get in all my protein. The DS turns you into a Hobbitt.

Glad you're on the mend!

That's a lot of prilosec. Are you experiencing heartburn? Try a different brand, like Nexium. Not all brands work for all people. My PCP had to try all of them to find one that worked for her.

I couldn't eat dense protein at all at 2 months out. Even the smallest bite sat in my stomach like a rock until I puked it up. Even now, 18 months later, I can only eat about two ounces of dense protein before I feel like I'm going to explode. (BTW, it wasn't until I dropped my PPI to 20 mg that I believe I had enough stomach acid to digest dense proteins and my vomiting became infrequent. I'm currently trying to wean myself off it completely.)

I still rely on a premier protein shake for breakfast every day to meet my protein goals. And as southern lady does, I eat constantly, just not very much at a time.

Good luck to you.

You're doing great I think! Trial and error on protein and what works.

Regarding water, have you tried putting lemon or lime in it? I could NOT tolerate plain water, it killed me! When I put squeeze of fresh lemon in it, totally different feel, I could DRINK! I'm 10 months out now and can finally drink water without lemon but usually still use it.

Wow, you're lucky if your sense of taste is already back to normal! Mine took a long time. It's normal now but thankfully I broke my addiction to diet sodas. I could not stand even the smallest sip of my beloved Diet Coke, taste wise, not talking about the discomfort the fizz would give. I don't miss it at all now and when we eat out it saves us money because hubby as mostly stopped ordering them too.

I eat a lot of fish--salmon and cod are my favorites. I bake them with butter and lemon pepper. You can flake the fish, put ranch dressing on it and eat it like tuna. Fish sets better on my stomach than just about anything else. I also bought a fruit infuser water bottle. You get a hint of fruit taste without actually eating the fruit. It helps with the water consumption and doesn't make my stomach feel bad.

protein shakes. I had severe issues I ended up on Protonix twice a day along with Prevacid once a day. I had the acid reflux so bad at night vomit would ever come out my nose.

sounds like you are on track

Keep trying different things. I couldn't eat hamburger for the longest time, but could eat steak. Go figure. And try a different PPI. You won't know which one works best for you without trying different ones.
Scallops and shrimp and good proteins and often tolerated better than others early out.

Nexium is esomeprazole

Prilosec is omeprazole

Protonix is pantoprozole

Prevacid is lansoprazole

They are all slightly different. One may work for one person but someone else may only respond to another.
I didn't say it was the same PPI, just the same company makes it.

I can't do tuna. I wasn't a seafood person pre-surgery and I am definitely not one now. I do chicken salad, but I just have zero desire to eat and it feels like a chore plus landing in my stomach it feels like a rock
