Dr. Alejandro Lopez, Tijuana, MX

Hi @windyridge4mom - glad you came over! As a rule this site is extremely helpful and insightful. I often use the bookmark feature to save info or references that I may not need today but suspect I will in the future.

I am glad that your experience was great in the MX. I am curious what was wrong with your arm that required a physician. I know an infiltrated IV would not. I also understand if you choose not to answer. One thing you will discover here - we talk about everything and anything personal from hair falling out to poops.

Welcome to the site.

Not sure what caused my arm to swell - might have been an anti-coag shot they gave me. I was having a lot of vomiting and they decided to start another IV to make sure I didn't dehydrate. I might have been a little upset and asked for a doctor to come in because the night nurse seemed a little concerned.

@windyridge4mom I had no problem with your post other than the naming of the company, which I see you have removed and that is appreciated. I wasn't sure if it was a shill post of not - we've had one real humdinger recently, and your post, while far less shill-ish in tone, seemed to come out of nowhere and had that company in it, which was a red flag. So I was on the fence, and am glad to learn you are legit.

And @CaraOC on behalf of the academy I hereby award you your credentials. You're welcome.

What?? no flowers? No after party? I didn't even have time to get my lipstick on!!!

What's that I smell? Is it coming from that crock?
This thread has been an eye opener. I learnt what a "shill" is today. It seems like Doctor Phil also is on this site.
I am probably way too naive to be here.
Also, so alcohol is common amongst bariatric patients? I got that from Spikey Bugger's post. Whodda thunk.

@Lokie, don't let a couple (well really just one) harsh post scare you away. You will find a group here that by and large is well informed and supportive. supportive doesn't always mean agreeing with everything someone else posts, or supporting a plan that doesn't sound well reasoned or well informed. It sometimes involves open and honest disagreements. In any large group, there's will always be some folks you get along with better than others. If you let one or two discourage you from participation, you will end up by yourself.
Alcohol issues are probably less common amongst bariatric patients than the general population. There are some, esp with gastric bypass, who turn to alcohol post-op, possibly as a substitute for being able to eat excessively, though there is some controversy as to the reason. We don't see this a lot with other operations.
And if you can figure out what a shill is so fast, you will do just fine around here.

Not exactly. I think alcohol, and drugs, and even excessive consumption of comfort foods are more common among those who self-medicate, though...obese or of normal BMI. Either way, alcohol is metabolized very differently for many of us post-DS. Jokingly, some of us say we can serve as the first drunk at tbe table AND the designated driver. (My husband says I'm a cheap drunk.) I might have a cocktail once every month or two...but even ten years post-op...a very few sips into that drink and my nose goes numb and I get silly...and by the time I get to the bottom of the glass, I wonder why I'm sitting with a bunch of people who are starting to get drunk...they should be ashamed.

Another caveat...that weird-acting alcohol thing when mixed with psychotropic drugs can create monsters.

Sorry for the abrupt beginning - you inadvertently triggered a response that was based on a history you don't know about - there are SO many ways that con-artists take advantage of the morbidly obese, and "medical tourism" companies are among the worst, times 10 when they are associated with certain Mexican surgery mills. Lopez is not a very well-known quantity, and you hit the trifecta when you didn't specify which surgery you got - so many people go to unvetted MX surgeons and come home with something other than what they were promised (no switch, a subpar sleeve, or a SADI instead of a DS). And sometimes, they end up coming back to the US with infections or horrible complications and lose their stomachs, their savings, their homes or even their lives, because of insurance problems with an uninsured procedure. And even worse are the Quislings of the bariatric world - someone who is a bariatric patient (or claims to be one) but really is just trying to find and curry the favor of uneducated, miserable, desperate fatties and who make money off of them by befriending and steering them to these butchers, and get a kickback from the surgeons.

So we tend to be a bit protective when someone shows up looking like one.

Alcohol abuse is quite common as a transfer addiction. I think DSers are less likely than other bariatric patients to be susceptible, because we are not all that deprived compared to them. But you WILL get buzzed - and drunk - faster, and possibly unpleasantly so - and you will also likely sober up more quickly. It changes your metabolism of alcohol, and that can be something to watch out for.

As for the apoplectic fit evidently pitched by your "defender," she is a long term vet with lots of information, but obviously also lots and lots of issues. There are at least several of us who have her blocked for that reason. When she does it on her own site, nobody can push back, because she kicks them off, but as you can see, she doesn't get away with that here. Review the last line of Spiky's post for a possible reason.

Hello and welcome @windyridge4mom! It sounds like you are doing very well post DS. I bet it was hell flying home just a few days after your surgery. I am glad to read that you got the message about carbs. How are you doing with your supplements?

Thank you so much for sharing, Windy. I am shocked at how you've been treated on here. I would love to hear more about your experience with Dr. Lopez, as I am scheduled for a sleeve to SADI-S revision with him next week. I hope you're doing well. I would love to hear about your progress! Did you do DS or SADI-S/SIPS (loop DS)?
