Brutal constipation. Please help!

To ease the burning, fill a squirt bottle with very warm water and squirt. Because of the angle, it might be better to refill a disposable water bottle with warm water (the plastic is usually more flexible than a pop bottle), recapping, then cut a 1" slash in the plastic about an inch or two from the cap. When you tilt it and squeeze, the water should spray upwards. I have a porcelain bidet so have never tried these ideas but read about them in the comments when I bought a travel "bidet in a bottle" on Amazon.

I have a bidet, which I love, but it only shoots room temp water (I live in CA). Thanks for the good idea of the squirt bottle. Also going to try a sitz bath. Is there any topical OTC cream which might ease the pain?

So there aren't hot water tanks in CA? (Who would want cold water on their warm privates?)

A cortisone cream might help. (Just use a little bit as cortisone creams applied thickly for a period of time can thin the skin and make things worse.) Preparation H or witch hazel never helped me. In fact the preparation H wipes were very irritating.

It's a matter of the bathroom hook-up. To get the warm water one I would have had to drill through the cabinet, run a line, etc. I'm Jewish and we are genetically incapable of that sort of thing. The cold water one took me three minutes to hook up. Since I only use it for #2, I actually find the cool water "refreshing." If I were a woman though I could see how I wouldn't want that water squirting me where #1 comes out.

You're a good doctor. Just talked to Kaiser and they're prescribing me a special 2.5% rectal cortisone cream to ease the inflammation. I tried Prep H, but since I probably probably don't have Hemorrhoids (no bleeding) it didn't do much more than plain old Vaseline would.

Thanks to you and everyone else for the responses. We're so blessed to have this resource.

As a fellow MOTT, I disagree! And see the Toto Washlet, which heats the water on demand. The water is instantly hot, so you don't get an initial blast of cold water either.

You've obviously never met my family. My grandfather couldn't use the can opener and my father would look under a car hood and say "Wow, is it busy in there."

Hmmm.... I've been having a similar issue. Well, not constipation, but a searing pain issue going on for hours after BM. That said I've got bleeding so am assuming it's a fissure. I'm on OTC recticare alternating with some preparation H cooling gel and ice packs. All I can say is yikes and you are not alone. No fun, no fun at all.

(P.S. I know with the bleeding for a few weeks and history of polyps / tumors I should probably get a colonoscopy and will do so in due course unless this spontaneously resolves. I have an MRI scheduled in a couple of weeks and want to wait until after that so I don't have the possibility of metal bits like hemostatic clips or staples moving about during the MRI.)

Oh boy. What you have sounds just awful. I really hope it works out. I got a prescription today for Proctozone-HC 2.5%. it's high strength hydrocortisone made especially for the anus. It's not a panacea, but it definitely helps ease the burning feel after a constipated BM. maybe you can ask your doctor for a prescription. He also recommended a "sitz" bath after each bm. Just sit in a few inches of LUKEWARM water for 15 minutes after each bm. Or, if you have a bidet, just let it shoot water up there for 15 mins. I wish you the best.

Thanks @Marquis Mark. I may do the sitz bath thing. Can't call doctor for a script because I know he will insist on a colonoscopy yesterday and I really need that MRI first (and that appointment is 1/25, so pretty soon).

These are the sort of things I never thought I'd ever discuss with anyone. :) Glad we have a place we can both feel comfortable enough to do so.

Hope you get relief!!!!

Diltiziem bethanecol is what you need for a fissure as it relaxes the muscle and allows blood flow do that promotes healing.... That and the warm shower running over your bung got me through 6 months of a chronic fissure

My fissures never bled - they were more like ulcers. That said, Hillary, you may have a thrombosed internal hemorrhoid - how about you go to a colorectal surgeon (bypass the nervous-Nellie GI) and see if it is something you can get treated for and complete relief with an office visit?

My father (who was training to be an Orthodox rabbi before he decided to be an atheist instead, because pork spareribs) studied engineering and did a lot of handy stuff around the house, and as the oldest, I enjoyed helping him and learning how to do a bit of it. I'm a scientist, so I had to build stuff for my experiments too. I changed my carburetor on my 73 Pinto when I was in grad school, and I can do some minor electrical stuff too. But I rarely have to anymore, since my husband is a contractor and can do everything better than me anyway.

My brothers are auto mechanics. But my sister is more of the hands-off type, so I guess the trait lives on. :)

I'm telling you, the Toto Washlet, which only has to be attached to the cold water supply and a plug (and of course, affixed to the toilet bowl) will change your life.

When I'm in enough pain, I'll discuss anything with anyone. You're OK. Good luck.
