Newby DS'r in vitamin trouble - now with lab numbers

I had hiccups a ridiculous number of times after surgery. I've always been the type to have hiccups, since I was a kid, but not like after surgery where it was every couple of hours. I suspect it was a vagus nerve thing since hiccups can be related to that, plus I had/have a variety if vagus nerve things since surgery. It has gotten way better over time and actually happens less than it did as a pre-op.
Oh, I forgot that you're not a newbie. Hmmm

I have hiccups occasionally, but have runny nose and sneezing fits very often when eating. Just was wondering, has anyone an opinion on liquid calcium citrate? I too have had some EXTREMELY serious bouts of constipation after taking Calcium Citrate tabs....to the point of having to digitally disimpact myself once while at work because I had a fist sized mass blocking my rectum. It was the worst night of my life....pain was sooo excruciating! I try to take Colace stool softener now...but am intrigued about the idea of switching to liquid calcium CITRATE. Anyone tried it? Can we absorb it ok?

Will, start by adding more fat and easing off the calcium FOR A DAY OR TWO to give your system time to adjust again. Then start adding back calcium WITH more fat...it is a fine balance.

Calcium of ANY kind will cause constipation. But esp any that go THRU the guts. Maybe try adding extra calcium thru the patch? But adding fat along with the stool softener, MORE fluid might help.

My husband gets constipated VERY easy..I make fat bombs for him but he also recently added Miralax daily to help. Unlike me, he doesn't drink ANYTHING in his coffee...he prefers his black and that is where I add even more fat for me. But we are careful with him as he has a PRE-OP history of anal fissures. All it takes is ONE day of not enough fat for him to get into trouble.

Thanks much Liz! I hadn't heard about a patch for calcium. I'm very much interested in taking some of the pressure off of my digestive system by reducing the number of pills I take daily. I get my B12 through shots monthly and if there is a patch for calcium, and any other delivery system for vitamins I can get....I want it! I do also have to do a better job ensuring I get a decent amount of fat in my diet. It's a work in progress as they say, but I'm going to keep fighting the good fight daily! Gracias again.

Yeap...now a caveat! I don't know how well patches work...many are trying it but be sure and watch your labs super carefully while trying. Company is called PatchMD.

I'm going to try the liquid stuff for now, and on 5/2 at my next Dr.'s appointment I'll ask for the patch and try that. I'm also going to ask for a bone density test too, just to see where I'm at. I'll be sure to note my labs with and without the patch...and let you all know how they worked out.
:walk:

Just a quick update since my original post. I have been working a demanding project in a remote area so not much time or ability to be online. I have been on the VitaLady basic DS plan for over six weeks now. I miss a few bedtime doses but I do hit the rest almost all the time.

I have noticed some huge improvements in my energy level and required sleep. I have also battled a skin condition combined with a weird acne on my face for the last several years. That symptom is gone. I don't have much joint pain anymore unless I over do it. In general I am able to be a lot more active with no pain or side effects. I'll go a few more weeks and do another blood lab then adjust accordingly.

Thanks so much to those that have helped and motivated me. I'm not out of the water yet but I am swimming toward shore. Still plan to have a few tests done and then look into infusions in the next weeks. Hope all is well for all of you. Take Care. EW

Glad to hear things are better - sorry I didn't see the question about my joke about the brain tumor (of course it was a joke!). When are you going down for an appointment with Rabkin?

That is my next priority Diana. Is Barbara still in his office? Wanna do lunch if I can get an appointment? I'm thinking early June. EW

Barb has retired. I'm out of town from the end of May to June 9th. If you come down and are here on the 21st, there's a party at my house :)

I'm sorry to hear about all of your troubles, especially with your PCP, who is being negligent in my opinion. This may be a naive question as I am a newbie myself, but, isn't your surgeon's office supposed to be checking your labs for you and ordering what you need?

IF my surgeon did my labs, I would only have them pulled once a year NOW and not all the ones I need.

I have a lab slip created from two different surgeons AND the Vitalady list and my PCP handles mine...and he pulls them 2 times a year. *I* adjust my own labs. IF I listened to my surgeon my vit D would be in the toilet and my PTH would be sky high.

In all fairness to my surgeon, I haven't done anything he suggested due to my own negligence. He has tried to follow up by mail and with surveys several times and I did not complete them. I have no one to blame but myself. I am working myself out of this health rut and will be re-establishing communication with him once I'm sure I'm healthy enough to not be wasting his time (a little joke there). I have found that there is quite a volume of people and printed materials on this site and others to get me going and help me maintain my labs. I think keeping current with your surgeon is a good thing, I just didn't have any relative information or labs to share until now. When I wrote "Newby" about I was referring to this site. I am almost 7 years out on my DS. Thanks for the kind words, but my troubles are mine and mine to also resolve. I'm on my way. EW
