Is it possible to not lose?

I read the post about Realistic Goals and Personal Responsibility (thanks Diana) and found it very useful as I navigate this journey.

One of my fears, especially after a failed lap band, is that this isn’t going to work despite doing everything right. I have no legitimate reason to believe it won’t work other than this irrational fear that something is wrong with my body that I don’t know about. Or the diabetes, weight, age, genetics, hormones will hold me back. I had the band 17 long years ago and it’s been a distant memory for the past 10. I honestly forget I ever had that POS.

If I use the BMI standard to determine a normal weight I would have to lose 170lbs to get to the 150lb “ideal normal” weight. So if the DS has an average weight loss of 75% after 2 years, I could expect a worse case scenario and lose 50% = 85 lbs or average case of 75% = 127lbs. My personal goal is 180lbs, so I would need to lose 140lbs, which is 82% EWL. Based on the stats, this SHOULD be doable. Thoughts? Have you seen anyone do everything right and not lose enough to improve their life?

Thanks again for all the great posts, I’m learning so much!

HW: 398.8
CW: 155 ( 10 lbs over my lowest)
I'm 2 years 7 months out I'm working on losing my regain. I did maintain my lowest but then my mom passed and I gained 20 lbs back, down 10 of them and working on the rest. What's so amazing is even when I'm actively trying to lose, I eat so much I'm never really hungry.

I have my consult on Monday with Dr. Dennis Smith! I wasn't expecting so soon and I'm so ready!

These are my questions. Can ya'll think of anything else I should ask?
  • How many DS have you performed?
  • One-stage procedure?
  • Complication/revision rates?
  • IBS-diarrhea - contraindicated?
  • Lap band removal-scar tissue?
  • Hiatal hernia repair?
  • Gallbladder removal?
  • Appendix removal?
  • Fatty liver – biopsy?
  • What happens if you get in there and can’t do DS or Sleeve - Do NOT want RnY
  • Sleeve size?
  • Bypass length (Cookie cutter, Hess?)
  • Preop diet?
  • Post op diet-short and long term
  • % EWL? – Goal 160, settle 180?
  • What if I continue to have deficiency despite doing everything right?
  • What do you offer in terms of follow-up?

I know he’s been doing them for a long time. Back about 10-11 years ago he mentored my surgeon, Dr. Boyce, and I’m 8.5 years out now.

Instead ask him who he mentored with to learn the DS. That would be a far more interesting question.

Ok! I know he’s been around and doing DS a long time. I binged his YouTube channel watching him perform surgeries (I’m a medical geek) and some patient interviews. Most of the videos were from 2010 and he’d been doing it a while already.

I notice that you went to Dr smith. How did it go? I am in the consultation phase, waiting on insurance.
