Great news! I was contacted by a company who contracted with our local hospital for cloth masks. They come already cut out, elastic cut, plastic coated metal bar, and video instructions. I shoild be able to mass produce at least 100 per day. My machine is industrial speed, 1500 stitches per minute, commercial. I cannot wait to get cranking!

I threatened Gus that I could draft him as well. He is very scared.....

You are magical.

MiniSue is associated with an organization that helps ex-cons and gang members learn how to be something other than criminals and gang members. (Some of them...a lot of them...really were not exposed to anything other than those choices.). One of the staff posted this story:

Someone asked one of the trainees in our program how he was holding up with the self-isolation “rules.” He responded, “I did 18-months in the hole, THIS is nothing.”

Asked for his advice yesterday, he said, “Read, pray, and exercise, just don’t do burpees cause those shits will fuck-up your back... but no one wants to say that….”

Read
Pray
Exercise
No burpees

Have you all got that?

Well, NC issued a stay in place order which fucked up our April plans. Thankfully, the sleep doc appt is being handled by phone due to the ability to telemed with Medicare during this. We are staying put in Myrtle Beach for another month. Not a bad place to be told to stay in place. As long as the crowds are less than 3 each or over 6 ft apart, the beach remains open.

Dh is currently researching ophthalmologists that can do an eye exam around the end of this month. If not, that will be pushed forward. Thanks to a fall he took due to balance issues back the first week of March, his glasses are slightly out of kilter. They've been adjusted three times at Costco but still not quite right. But he needs a new prescription to get new ones. No reason to get a new frame for his old lenses.

We also need to be in Worchester, MA by the 1st of July. He has an appt with a neurosurgeon to check his shunt (he also has NPH and has for over 10 years, the balance issue is one symptom of it failing). And I suspect he will be having surgery while there. His would not be considere elective surgery. So while we HAD our summer planned, we now need to adjust and find a new place in MA for a month or so.

Well, when Elizabeth says the F word, we KNOW shits serious.

We will all get through this together.

My love to Charles.

These masks? Are quite the project. They are custom, not the folded accordion ones. These end up shaped like the N95 masks, without the rubber seal. The company pays $2.50 per mask made, which I will be turning down. I wonder what they are charging the hospital, and if my donation will be passed on or absorbed.

I thought I would zip thru 100 per day. Lucky to get 40 done. But, boy, is time flying. I have Gus turning them rightside out, but he refuses to bring them back to me. I feel like a performance review is in his future.......

Wow, sounds like a tough pattern, but one that is probably results in a very comfortable mask. Do you know the fabric specs? I recently saw that some anesthesiologists devised use of sterilization wrap (for autoclaved instruments) as a mask fabric given its significant filtration properties.

I recommend taking the $2.50 per and donating those funds unless the whole operation is a 501c(3). I doubt they will adjust the charge to the hospital - may end up just going to administrative costs or salaries, might be even more beneficial to take the funds and disburse them directly to a benefit those on the front lines.

The fabric looks like the same fabric that scrubs are made of, 2 layers thick, with a metal insert across the nose, and elastic loops angled from the sides. Everything is laser cut, huge stacks of different colors.

They will be sterilized after we sew them, and can be reused, I suppose, til the elastic wears out?

Top stitched and reversible, the size can be varied by sewing the seams and tucks different sizes.
