That scared me!

Seems like mostly it affects women, usually with gall bladder removed. It actually is biliary spasms, which are incredibly painful. Some of us only get attacks w/ narcotics, but others get the spasms from caffeine, alcohol or food. Very hard to find doctors who are knowledgeable in treating it.

@DianaCox, Eureka! SOD makes perfect sense. Postprandial timing could be due to taking Norco with food (ironically to prevent stomach upset)... I am so hopeful this is it!!!

@kirmy , so sorry for your suffering - so grateful you wrote about it. I've been having similar unbearable bend-in-half pain for almost a year and practically gave up on expecting a solution ever. We were unable to find the problem despite scoping/MRI/bacteriological testing and attributed it to probably some kind of crazy adhesion situation.

@angelohio - thanks so much for mentioning this possibility of SOD to Kirmy. This may mean the end of an absolutely agonizing chapter in my life.

You all are my heroes!

So how does one approach a doctor and request tests that would determine how to treat their SOD? I had a hard enough time getting them to diagnose it. Now I have to convince them it's not going away. Ugh!

You may be able to find someone at a big medical center. They are usually reluctant to do a surgical fix as it freq causes more problems like pancreatitis. Do you know what kicks off your symptoms? Narcotics is my trigger, but others report caffeine, too much food, being hungry. Many triggers. There is a sod board on Facebook which may help you. Good luck!

Deedee, what about the university hospital-connected docs there in SLC?

University is within my insurance loop but I would need a referral. I see the surgeon tomorrow and I am hoping that Dr Megan is in a helpful problem solving mood. If I don't get some action from her, I have thought about paying out of pocket for a sit down with Dr Cottam and get his opinion. However, that may not work because I couldn't afford to have him treat me so he may be reluctant to even consult.

As for the trigger, that is what has me worried. My trigger was the opiates but yesterday I had no opiates, haven't since the 7th of February. It just came out of the blue. I have read that fats, dairy, and tomatoes can set it off. If that's the case that would cut out about half the foods I depend on. The only thing I did different yesterday, was in the morning I jumped on my aerobic rider and did a set of 10 pulls. I noticed afterwards I felt a little tingle in my upper abdomen. It was about four hours later that the pain began. I don't know how the two would be connected but maybe I stretched or stirred something up.

I need to find solutions to controlling, avoiding, and hopefully curing this. I appreciate the input, suggestions, and continued support.

Deedee, it probably was the exercise which kicked up the sod issues. Many people complain about being unable to exercise or do heavy cleaning. Neither seem to affect me. Since you have been diagnosed, what type did they say you had? Would Be SOD type 1,2 or 3. What did the specialist say yesterday? Most seem to be reluctant to give a diagnosis, esp since treatment seems to be hit or miss. My dr said their policy is to strongly discourage surgical treatment as it causes lots of complications. I DID Not want surgery at all, so we agreed on that. The Bentyl seems to help but so does strong hot peppermint tea. I am now exploring artichoke extract. My spasms are sporadic and very mild so I have not requested anything stronger for pain. Please let us know what you find that works, or what may be a trigger for you!
