She's married, and her husband is vegetarian as well. They do, in fact, shop at Trader Joe's. I didn't know they did prepped fish meals there; I'll suggest that she looks for them.

I agree, it should be doable, as long as she realizes how important it is not to skimp on protein. She also needs to cook more fresh food and not rely on prepackaged veggie meals. And she needs to revamp her supplement regimen. In other words, her health needs to become her priority.

    Recovery time...for non-sissies?

Adding my two cents' worth to the good advice everyone has given so far. An open procedure is a big, major deal. When I woke from anesthesia, all I could manage was to feebly croak out one word: "pain." I have lived with chronic pain for 36 years, and I've had 18 surgeries in my lifetime, and...

She doesn't normally participate in online forums, so I'm not sure I can convince her to pay us a visit, but I'll certainly pass on what everyone has so generously imparted.

She is not a strict herbivore. She does eat fish, eggs and dairy products. But still, her health is not what it should be because I'm sure she doesn't make a point of maximizing her protein. I will be letting her know how dangerous it can be to let postop DS nutrition slip.

Thank you for sharing this. I intend to have a frank discussion with her about the damage she is inflicting on her body in the name of "vegetarian ethics."

Ideas for a warm winter's healthy desk drink?

There is another brand -- Pero instant natural beverage available for about $6-7 for a 100/serving cannister.

She is vegetarian for ethical more than health-seeking reasons. And you are right -- it's up to her to make better choices.

I have urged her to go back to animal protein. She does eat eggs and fish. I don't really know her full vitamin regimen, but she does take ADEK's, and 50,000 dry D. Frustratingly, due to insurance constraints, she is not under the care of a DS doctor, does not get regular blood work, and only...

Update on my drama mama ASS

Scott, I'm sorry you're having to go through so much. As others have said, and I'm sure you know, the silver lining in this shit-cloud is that you are in the capable hands of Dr. K. I'll be rooting for you.

Calling on vegetarian DS veterans for advice --

I need some assistance on behalf of my daughter. She had BPD/DS 16 years ago, suffers from chronic anemia (requiring periodic infusions), and became vegetarian about 18 months ago. Her health is suffering, as she is quite run down and becomes ill often. Her internist told her she needs to...

Fasting and other preparations for blood work

Thanks everyone for your input. Had 17 tubes drawn yesterday, fasting and without supplements. Asked at the lab, and was told that holding supplements for 24 hours was the way to go, and fasting necessary for the lipid workup.

Don't know if this will help at all, but I have read that Protonix can cause hoarseness and sore throat.

Dear Doctors please do not do this:

@writegirl -- Don't let your PCP scare you into thinking large doses of Dry D after surgery will cause toxicity. Many doctors routinely prescribe D2, and/or minimal doses of D3, but that won't bring up a deficient Vit D level. As @southernlady noted above, you will need to take whatever amount...

Fasting and other preparations for blood work

On various forums, I have read that some people fast prior to blood work, and some don't. Some discontinue all supplements for 24 hours. I assume people are following doctors' instructions in these matters. I'm interested in knowing how others prepare for blood testing and what practices give...
