Thank you to everyone who has posted such great information about vitamins and lab work. I've been learning a lot about the differences living with a DS vs RNY.

I'm curious about supplements that produce a healthy gut. My Mother had Alzheimer’s and my father has Parkinson and there is growing research on the power of food and supplements for slowing down both of these diseases.

I really saw a difference in my Mother with getting her off of carbs and sugar and with strong pro-biotics and digestive enzymes. I saw a post at one point talking about the importance of NOT taking digestive enzymes because it will undo some of the malabsorption.

Is that true? And would that be true for supplements around gut health? If I took this product, would it also counter act the DS? It’s multiple strains of probiotics and a few other things.

OR all three products that also help the brain and gut communicate…

Any help or resources to learn more would be greatly appreciated. My Mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s (only 5 years older than I am right now) and I want to do everything I can to help my body.

Thanks again,

Dawn

I'm a huge fan of probiotics, and many DSers take them (and I think the ones that aren't are missing the boat). They find out more all the time about how important the gut microbiome is, and I think it's especially important for us, because with some bypassed limb, and also a lot of nutrients going through that haven't been broken down as it would be in a normal digestive tract (especially fat) some things can get out of balance, which we often notice with gas or smellier stool. I may be inadvertently feeding too much bad flora with all that poorly digested food, so I try to take several different strains of good guys to keep things in balance. I started playing around with probiotics when I had my DS over 10 years ago, and have always had an easy time with not much gas or bathroom issues, despite not being a careful eater and eating carbs at will. I think it may be probiotics I can thank for that, and I'm not going to quit them long enough to find out for sure.

Digestive enzymes are another thing, and they may increase absorption more than you want. I know some who were prescribed Creon, which I think is a digestive enzyme (I think there are other names/brands too) when they were malnourished, or lost too much, and I'd avoid those if not trying to gain weight/nourishment.

There have been some great probiotic studies, some posted at this site too, but don't specifically recall an alzheimer's one, but do recall a gut/brain connection study.

Not probiotics, but I did read something you may be interested for alzheimer's studies, about using a 40 hz light that can help the brain with it's "clean up" phase and reduce plaque, that looks promising. I ordered one for my mom, and while we didn't do any before after tests, we are on week 2, and so far so good.

Be a critical thinker and beware of pseudoscience designed to empty your wallet! Just remember all those amazing diet pills out there guaranteed to eat your fat cells and block all the carbs you eat? They will pimp any and everything they can to divorce you from your money. Generally speaking that means you disregard everyone who is trying to sell you something! Read real studies at sites like pubmed or NIH, JAMA. Not popscience.

Fat people are desperate. As are the people suffering from other disease processes like Alzheimer's. They and their loved ones will try anything. And there are plenty of companies out there willing to take advantage of us. And when these products fail, it's our fault. Not the product. Great deal for them.

You never WANT to take something like creon or viokase. The reason the DS works is malabsorbtion and these enzymes only make you absorb more. That's something you don't want unless you are too thin. Everyone has some degree of malabsorbtion. Poop has calories in it. I have cared for enough sick elderly people to be pretty positive they absorb less as they get older and sicker. Mainly because you can often see whole pills in their poop. I think it is possible many elderly people could benefit from absorbing more, most likely those who are quite frail and thin. I am pretty sure it is not related to transit time because many of them tend towards constipation because they don't drink enough or take in enough fiber. Drugs that slow peristalysis would be contraindicated so that would make the enzyme treatment the obvious first choice.

Speaking as a former research scientist, I can tell you for sure I can manipulate data to prove that eating DQ 5 times a day will make you lose weight and be as healthy as an Olympic athlete. I can prove almost anything by picking and choosing my data. If I can do this, so can everyone else.

Probiotics are the new hot THING right now. So thousands of providers have jumped into the market and jacked up the prices to the stratosphere. Bacteria are cheap to produce BTW so somebody is making a LOT of money. Do they work? There have been some real studies that indicate they may be beneficial. And there are also interesting findings that warrant further investigation. I am all for further investigation into the gut biome. There is a lot we don't know. What has impressed me the most so far are the positive but anecdotal reports by my fellow DSers. I was impressed enough to try them for several months and all they did(that *I* could see) was give me ferocious gas. But it sure didn't hurt me to try them. In particular, as a fatty, I would love to see more studies that compare the gut bacteria of fat people to the gut bacteria of maybe those Olympic athletes. But poop studies are not glamorous and the drug companies are not going to pay for studies that stand to make them no money.

Always follow the money!

BTW, if one of my loved ones had Parkinson's I would try this. It won't hurt him and there have been more than few reports saying it works. Watch some of these videos.

CBD isn't cheap either but it would be worth a try.

I wonder if it also works for familial essential tremors like I have. Not ready to try yet because they aren’t terrible but still in the annoying stage. It acts like Parkinson’s but isn’t. It’s what Katharine Hepburn had to deal with. If you look at her early work, it isn’t obvious but in later works like On Golden Pond, it is very obvious. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_tremor

I ran across a study the other day in another group about e-coli creating MORE has as a response to probiotics to protect itself. I didn't read it yet, but book marked it for when I have time, because I've read so many people complaining probiotics made things worse, then better. Don't recall study size or anything else, but could link it here when I get back to the computer if anyone is interested in it.

I sure wouldn't hesitate to try it!

Wow...thank you!!! This makes me feel much better about taking all the gut health supplements. I'd love to know how it goes with your Mom.

My partner had huge tremors after an injury that they treated as if it were Essential Tremors. She did neurofeedback and it healed her tremors. It's supposedly is the main treatment protocol. Have you tried it before?

I really appreciate this! I agree there is a lot of money being made off of something that's been around for ages. I've done years of probiotics and just wasn't sure about how the DS would be affected.

Mine are genetic. Unless we can change my genes.....
Mine are still focused in my hands at this point but is worse than even five years ago. But I’ve adjusted as I go along. I seldom have, what my hubby refers to as, Mt. Vesuvius moments.
