Calcium and Magnesium: Together or apart?

@Amey thyroid meds HAVE to be taken away from all other medication and with water. Can't take the PPI or the probiotic with it. It's why I take mine during a middle of the night pee run.

I should set some vites out to take during mid sleep bathroom calls..thanks

BTW, do you mean 100 of K2 MK7? 1,000 would require 10 pills.

No typo....I take one thousand of K2 MK7. And it's only 2 pills. In the USA you can only buy 120 mcg tablets. I order from a place in the UK that sells 500 mcg tablets that are really easy to swallow.

My lap band messed up my PTH really bad and I have terrible knee pain. When I started taking the 1000 of the K2 then I noticed a real difference in the pain level of my knees and I know it helped bring my PTH down. And...it's cheaper than buying it in the US - even with the shipping.

I TRY to do that. Sometimes I sleep though the 3 AM alarm so I take it as soon as I wake up and then the PPI and probiotic about 30 minutes to an hour later and only drink water during that time. I know it's not ideal, but I get it in me. When I was consistently taking it at 3 AM my thyroid labs were better....but since surgery it seems like I sleep through the alarm a few days a week. And I have never been one to get up to pee in the middle of the night.

No wonder I couldn't find it on Amazon. 1000 mcg. Must be pretty expensive... BTW, I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong by taking the magnesium apart. It just differs from the standard advice of taking the calcium apart, that's all. Ultimately, if it works for you, great. I think you are going to find though a huge difference in some levels post op. Please post your labs when you get them. Be well.

Thank you @Marquis Mark. I expect there will be a big change with my first labs and some rearranging adding of vites with my first labs. I will definitely post then here with my vitamin regimen.

I have always been told that Calcium should be taken alone, away from everything else. Here is a quick blurb from a good Dr we know, on calcium and Magnesium:

Required –Mandatory supplements needed life long Multi-Vitamin:
Any adult multi-vitamin such as Centrum, One a Day or Costco’s Kirkland Brand

Calcium: Must be taken in divided doses of 500 mg. (that is all the patient can absorb at a time). Calcium must be CITRATE or Hydroxyapatite, NOT Carbonate.

Please pay special attention to the labels!

Magnesium:
Patients need to take 250 mg. of magnesium for every 500 mg. of calcium, but not together.
  • Magnesium Oxide: Least absorbed, stays in the bowel causing loose stools
  • Magnesium Citrate: Better absorbed, some stays in the bowel causing mild loose stools which can help offset constipation caused by calcium or some irons
  • Magnesium Glycinate: Best absorbed, usually does not cause loose stools  Calcium and magnesium are Antagonist with each other
  • Magnesium is needed for bone health and calcium utilization

I thought I'd resurrect this issue. Has anyone had experience with Mag. Cit. vs. Mag. Glycinate? I've been using Mag. Cit (Vitalady) buy recently my Mag levels dropped...and my Vit K is low. I thought a change to Vit Gly might be helpful. I'm also curious why Vitaday doesn't offer Mag. Glycinate. She is usually really on top of what is best for bariactric supplementation.

I started on magnesium bisglycinate a few months ago. I buy this

According to very bright people, one Dr and one Critical Care nurse this stuff has the best bioavailability and should be taken at half the amount of your calcium.

Scott do you take it with your Calcium?
No I take the Jarrow Bone Up separate from everything else as Dr K recommends. I take the magnesium bisglycinate with my other vitamins.

From what I've read the AMOUNT you take may determine whether it's OK to take calcium with other supplements, including magnesium. Think of your guts like a doorway -- only so many people can get through it at any one time. If too many try to barge through at once, many will get squeezed out. Apparently, calcium is the pushiest guy on the block so it tends to crush the competition. But, if you're only taking about 200 of calcium and 200 of magnesium they should both be able to get through. That's why you'll often see iron, calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc in multivitamins. All of them could be antagonists in larger quantities, but, if they're small enough, there should be room for all to get through the door at once.

Thanks guys. Now I'm on to figuring out what to supplement for Vidalady's Cal Cit tender....it's been back ordered for 4 months.

Any Calcium citrate tablet should be fine. You can find them cheap at Piping Rock, Puritan, Swanson, etc. 200 tablets (3oo mgs each) for about $8, I think.

The whole calcium and magnesium thing is interesting to me. I take 2,000 mg of cal. cit (I need more, and am going to supplement with cal. Apatite),
but only 500mg of Magnesium Cit. My Mag. level is on the high end. I do take it with my calcium.

I contacted Vitalady and they said,

"As far as taking Calcium with Magnesium we don’t know of any problems. Most Calcium supplements contain Magnesium to help aid absorption. We have always taken them together" I've also decided to switch my mag Cit. to mag Glycinate (just based on the testimony here).

I also asked Vitalady about Mag. Glycinate...the response was:

"We are not knowledgeable on the Glycinate form. So no help there. Look at the following link which may help.
http://www.livestrong.com/article/271338-what-are-the-benefits-of-magnesium-glycinate/ "

I'm excited to hear there is a 500mg K2 pill available. I currently take 300mcg of K2 (2 pills) and I need more. Never thought of buying in the UK. I also takes 2,000 mcg of K1. Still trying to get my levels up to where they can see them!

Mark those are starting levels for a starter tegimen. It says to adjust based off of labs. I didn't take copper or zinc until over a year out because the levels were fine. There are tons of pieces on his site about each specific vitamin for which people can read. That patient book is covered in groups as part of his program so it is backed up with verbal discussion and it isn't intended to tell a random Internet user what to do. Just informational. Dr K knows his vitamin and supplementation stuff.

I suggest that you go to FB and join that duodenal switch group....I can add you if you want me to. There is a wealth of information there with lots of vets 10 years plus out and some very sharp medical professionals living with a DS who can give another perspective to your questions
Add me to the group if you dont mind sir.
