Greetings everyone!

I had a VSG 7 years ago. I did really well until 3 years in when I experienced multiple stressors: my father died; my mother's dementia progressed and she can no longer recognize me; I was diagnosed with MS; lost a job I loved; had rotator cuff surgery; dh was laid-off, not rehired with good insurance lol. Anyway, I dealt with the stress by just losing interest/not caring/becoming really depressed. And, bad eating and no moving over 4 years has me right where I was 7 years ago.

I just called my surgeon's office and found out she is now doing the DS! I couldn't be happier. My appt to see her is on Friday the 13th ;-) I'm embarrassed about the weight gain but I've never perceived her as judgy. Fingers crossed and I hope to learn a lot from this site!

Wow, sorry life has send you some rough spots.

BUT, know the surgery failed you, you did not fail. The VSG was never designed to be a stand alone surgery.

I doubt she will be judgy, she has seen others who the surgery has failed for too. And if she is, if you can get the DS, who cares. But, I doubt she will be judgy.

You are taking care of yourself now. That is what matters.

The VSG is just another diet with a smaller stomach. The DS addresses the metabolic issues. Don't worry about the surgeon. I think she figured it out too!

Hi again @Babette and welcome! Great to see you here.

Please let us know, after your appointment, whether or not your surgeon really does the DS, and really does the real standard of care DS with 2 anastomoses. It would be great for the DS community to have resources in MA, so I'm hopeful that she does. And I hope she isn't judgy, either. There is no good reason for that, especially after all you've been through in the last few years, and are still experiencing with your mother. My father had Alzheimer's too, and while I miss him greatly, I'm grateful that he never got to the point of not recognizing me. This is a terrible disease and my heart goes out to you and your family.

I'll be calling my doc tomorrow to make sure she does the correct DS! She's incredibly precise/perfectionist so I'm assuming she does.

Ask if she does the Hess method or the 2 anastomosis DS with the common channel no longer than 150 (100 is better). If she doesn't, ask her to draw it for you when you see her and then share her drawing with us.

Having a DS surgeon in MA would be ideal!
