UHC restriction

Thanks! That's not shocking! I never thought I would go to Mexico but at the same time I've been treated terribly and got sick in American hospitals and end up paying tons more than I should have! I contacted their office and got a price I'm seriously considering it! The did all your pre-op testing the same day or surgery? I'm going to ask but did they happen to say what would happen if there was an issue with your pre-op testing?

You are picked up at San Diego airport about 11am and driven to the hospital where pre-op testing is done that afternoon, then surgery the next day. Blood work, EKG, I think there was a chest X-ray. All included in the price quoted.

You are to provide a complete medical history so if you tell the truth they will assess based on that. I believe they do not do this surgery on those with a 50+ BMI (curiously just the opposite of many US docs.)

They told me they did turn someone away at the last minute who told other patients he had had a heart attack or something equally as serious only a month prior... and they all ratted him out to the medical staff.

Oh that's terrible! I'm the kind of person that wants a 2nd ekg "just in case" I understand wanting it done sooner but you have to stay safe. I'll have to find out about the bmi I'm right around that cutoff. Thank you so much for answering my questions!!

I, too, have only good things to say about the Mexico/Esquerra experience. I'll be happy to answer any questions.

You need to save money so you can buy clothes to fit your new bod and to do the things you're going to feel like doing!

Thank you so much! I messaged them and asked about the bmi. I'm running into another issue which may force me to stay in the US for surgery. Apparently all the offers to watch my 6 year old son were only good if I never took anyone up on the offer  so now my husband and I are looking at the possibility of taking him with us, not to Mexico but a Texas surgeon. Having surgery and them staying in a room. I'm really hoping it won't come to that! I can't imagine how stressful that would be on him!!! And my husband who works 80+ hours a week and isn't used to dealing with him all the time. I may wake up to my husband in a hospital bed next to me suffering a nervous breakdown :lmao:

I would love nothing more but my husband is a horrible worrier and is insistent on going! I guess he thinks if a problem comes up the surgeon will come get him for help? When I had our son I ran into a few complications so they took our son and tried to get my husband to go with them he refused until I made them move my oxygen mask so I could try to yell at him to "go with the baby!" He'd sit in the OR if they'd let him :ROFLMAO:

Yikes! I wouldn't want that negative "worrier" energy around me when having surgery. Try and convince him how important it is for him to stay home with your son. You can always Skype/Facetime him from the hospital. (They have wifi and it's close enough to border to pick up US cell phone signals so no foreign roaming fees.) I went alone and was glad for it. You'll be zonked from pain killers and sleeping most of the first two days which means your guest will quickly get bored -- my husband would have been SOOO annoying!!!! And I would think it would be frightening for a 6 year old to see his mother zonked out, with gory drains and catheters.

I went by myself (to Montreal, not Mexico) and was glad I did. You want to be selfish when you're sick, not worrying that you're causing other people to worry.

I couldn't fly back to Singapore for 10 days, so a girlfriend flew up from the US to hang out for a long weekend. That was about Day 3 or 4, and I was feeling a little more human. We still mostly lay on the sofa bed and watched HGTV.

I put myself in his shoes and I wouldn't want him to go without me so I won't tell him no. I do get where he's coming from. I had my sleeve with Dr. Nicholson and they wanted to send me home sick as can be and he refused. I was so out of it from nausea meds and painkillers I wasn't really sure what was up. So it was good he was there. Well I would have a babysitter during the day in Texas. My son has autism and refuses to sleep if he's not in his bed or with one of us. Which we've been working on that but its one of those things you never know how any child will do. My mom helped with my last surgery but she passed exactly a year after it so we're just trying to do what's best. I'm ever hopeful I will actually have a babysitter come summer time. And we can just go to Mexico. They have answered my questions so much better than any doctor here in the states! Plus no reason paying more than double, the doctor obviously has tons of experience. I'm trying to talk a friend into going with me. That would be good because hubby could take care of our son and I'd still have someone with me so he wouldn't worry as bad. Thank you all for your help!!

I do hope you take a deep breath and slow down. It gets complicated and the fastest resolution isn't always the best.

Now...Mexican families (and I are one) don't generally deliver a family member to the hospital. They ALL move in. And the ones that don't fit are in the lobby with rosaries. It's just how my people roll. I've been in a couple of hospitals in Mexico and one, in the US, that caters to their local immigrant population. They all had an extra bed or Murphy bed or futon thing for the family member. My Gringo husband stayed with me, in the hospitals, for both the band and the DS. He needed me to translate, I needed him because it was kinda scary.

Not sure what Esquerra has to offer, but making it known that you want your family with you will make you seem more like a nice family-oriented lady instead of a cold, heartless Gringa Gal.
