Hi Everyone,

I have a question for anyone who has gone from a VSG to DS. I’ve been spending so much time on here reading and learning as much as I can before I have surgery. I’m seeing that there are a lot of people who have gotten the DS have gotten really sick or can’t keep food down after surgery. It’s making me really nervous. When I had my VSG over two years ago I didn’t puke once and still haven’t. Never took any pain meds, even in the hospital I had a morphine pump but never felt like I needed to use it. Yes it hurt but it was totally bearable for me.

My stomach was very swollen but I took things very slow. I’m not saying that I never felt like I needed to puke from getting to know my new stomach, but it seems like a lot of people are puking after the DS. It’s just scaring me. Is there people out here that didn’t get sick after the DS revision from VSG? I’m just curious how different my recovery will be from VSG to the DS? I know everyone is different but is getting sick to my stomach something I’ll just have to accept in order to get the DS? I can accept the smelly farts and poop, but puking….I don’t know. Thank you in advance for anyone willing to share their experience. Good OR bad.

I am 14 years postop and have never puked yet. And at my stage of the game it's not likely that any puking could be blamed on the DS. Since you made it through the sleeve without puking, and that's the hard part, the switch should be no big deal.

Getting sick is not a DS thing unless something is wrong. If you already have the sleeve, then the stomach part is done anyway and there is no surgery on it converting from sleeve.

While I'm a virgin DSer, I have not puked once since my DS 6.5 plus years ago. I've "slimed" twice...but not to the point of puking.

I've been puking way too much recently - but it is something I believe is unrelated to my DS. I have reflux and gastritis, and the nausea mostly happens in the wee smalls (3-5 AM) - there's nothing in my stomach and I mostly salivate, then barf the spit and dry heave a lot. But I don't believe I barfed even once for the first 6 years, and even then, it was from food poisoning.

If you're not on a PPI, get on one. If you are on a PPI, switch to another one and see if it helps.

I'm 5 years DS and haven't puked in that time frame outside of (1) cancer operation taking out sections of pancreas and liver and (2) stomach flu caught from my beloved, but germy kiddos....

So, to me, I have thrown up alot. I'm still having trouble figuring out when I'm full and eating slow enough. If I follow those rules I'm fine, if I mis predict, I'm not. It's getting much better.

I was a Virgin DS.

I've puked a couple times after my DS and I've been reeeeeeeally close a few times. All were when my eyes were larger than my stomach.

I had lots of puking of dense protein. (virgin DS) I suspect I was taking too much PPI and didn't have enough acid left to digest.

But keep this in mind: people who have trouble with their WLS go on sites like these looking for answers. People with no problems may not have a reason to seek out these forums. Ergo it can appear that "everyone" is having problems when very few are.

I was virgin DS, slimed two or three times early post op due to that "one bite too many" thing. I think I vomited once (the real thing, not slime) from eating too fast/too much. I've been very fortunate in that I've had no problems.

I spent three years, with the stupid LapBand, upchucking on an almost daily basis. Band caused GERD/reflux. (I use PPIs because of that damage.)

Got that puppy out, and revised to the DS, almost 12 years ago. Barfed a few times during tbe immediate post-op time. Since then, I can't think of one time.

Post-op, when I've thrown up, it's been from being ill and not from eating - unlike the band, when I was familiar with all restaurant bathrooms. I can think of one time with the DS where I've thrown up after eating, and that was an hour later. Something wasn't sitting well, and it was one of those 'Either I make myself throw up now or I'll sit around for another few hours until I throw up' deals.

Random observation - I got so used to being able to make myself throw up when needed with the band due to stuck food, I couldn't believe how hard and unpleasant it was to do with the DS.

Thank you so much for your input. It actually help put my mind at ease :) I'm so excited to start this new journey!
