Hi all, I am new here and already I have learned so much. I am pre-op with Dr. Coates for a "Traditional DS" scheduled for 9/13/17. After 6 months of his PA's telling me I was "too old" for a DS and I "might lose too much weight" and trying to talk me into a SADI Loop, my insurance approval came back for the DS (CPT 43845). I met with Dr. Coates to discuss and he said he would do the traditional DS with a 100cm CC. (I hope I have these terms correct). So, I am excited and a little anxious. Basically I don't care as much about being thin as I do about getting a knee replacement at some point (bone on bone x years). I peruse these pages just about everyday making sure I am able to take care of my DS and optimize my health. The information here is invaluable. As Brene Brown says "we can chose courage or we can chose comfort but we cannot have both at the same time." So today I am putting myself out there (I'm usually very private). I chose courage. Thank you for yours.

Hi and welcome!
Great job doing your research and sticking up for yourself. But how sad that the surgeon and his staff tried to scare you out of the bariatric surgery with the best statistics of any standard of care bariatric operation, and into an experimental procedure that probably wouldn't be covered by your insurer (if they found out what he was doing) and with unknown long term results.
Even with the promises you have been given, I would still recommend getting it in writing. Put on your consent form "standard of care duodenal switch with 2 anastomoses only, no "loop DS, SADI, or SIPS" or whatever wording you are comfortable with. If you are able to email with the surgeon, get it in emails before you even get to surgery. You can't be too careful these days.
And great quote about courage! I'll have to remember that one.

Thank you, great suggestion!

Welcome.

Wonderful! I had my bone-on-bone knee replaced after loosing 80% of my excess weight.

Funny how they would say you're too old. Most people would say you're too young to die. I'm not sure I would still be here if I hadn't had surgery. If so, I would probably want to die.

I agree with the others: You're going to do well. You've already made the decision and that seems to be the biggest hurdle.

Best wishes.

Welcome and good for you on sticking to your guns on the traditional DS. Dr. Coates does this a lot from what I have seen. He talks about DS at first and then tries to talk his patients into that Loop thing. I don't get it. Must be a much easier surgery is all I can think.

He is looking for cases because he wants to do a study. Most likely!

Then he should be upfront about that and state that to his patients, like Dr. Boyce does when he is doing a clinical trial or clinical study. But, he doesn't do that. He talks to them about the DS and then does the bait and no switch game on them. It's not cool.

I agree completely! I think there are going to be consequences one of these days for bait and don't switch and all the look alike sort of DS variations. And I think they are being coded as DS and that would be insurance fraud.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. I forgot to include some stats so here goes. Age 57, CW 272, BMI 49. Dr. Coates did a DS on a friend about 1 1/2 years ago and she is very happy with the results. I am hoping for the same.

Be very careful with Coates...make sure he is doing the two anastomoses DS and not the SADI/SIPS/LoopDS which is still not considered a standard of care WLS for ASMBS/insurance purposes.
