List of DS surgeons

I lived close to there (4 hours north) and while I heard rumors, I've also heard its is a SADI not a DS.
They did offer the SADI years ago under Dr Byrnes, but had poor results. Dr Pullatt offers the conventional DS at both MUSC and through the VA hospital system in South Carolina. My husband and I had our surgical notes reviewed recently by bariatric nurse that's a good friend of mine. She verified that we both had a traditional "DS with BPD", and 2 stitch points, not one like the SADI. The only concern she had is that both common channels are longer than what her Dr's group perform. But not necessarily out of the norm given our pre-existing conditions.

I hate that this question keeps coming up without everyone doing their research because there are no other surgeons currently in SC performing the DS as an option. Everything is Sleeve or RNY. The DS is a really good option for a lot of patients, and I want more people to research the program at MUSC when considering weight loss surgery. I've actually been chosen by an outside group to be evaluated for patients that were revised from VSG to DS 3+ years or more. That's something I'm excited about because of all the information that can come from that that can help others. This group also reviewed my post-op notes and chose me because I had traditional DS.

The only thing I can tell anyone who has "doubts" about the program is to have the consult like we did, specifically ask your questions about the DS vs SADI, ask Dr Pullat to describe the DS that he performs, and attend a support gruop of his patients to get their opinions and outcomes. If after all of that, you believe it is not a traditional DS then run. But I'm pretty sure you'll find the convincing answers I did, and make your decision.

Linda, you are the first person I know of that has come forward to state that yes, it is a traditional DS. That's great as no one else would step forward and "prove it" either here or on FB. I even contacted the WLS division and no one responded to me. Thank you.

@Moonbeam are you willing to travel to FLA? It's just south of GA, right? Dr. Smith in Celebration, FLA does do sleeve to DS and has an excellent reputation. Or if Tenn is better for you, Dr. Boyce.

Thanks for that. Knoxville would be much closer.

But here's a question, and maybe I need to post this as a separate post....but my original sleeve surgeon does not do the DS. When I call doctors in my state, they always say they wont do a DS if you have had the sleeve done by a different surgeon in the same state, regardless if the original surgeon does DS or not. But if I had my original sleeve done in a different state, the new doctor will do it. Why? Makes no sense.

@Psychomom do you know whether Dr. Syn is doing the standard of care DS with 2 anastomoses, or is he doing the SADI and calling it a DS? The only procedure I could find mentioned on his website at all is gastric bypass. Perhaps I missed something?
He does the traditional DS with two anastomoses.

On my next visit, in about 3 weeks, i will speak with the Practice Manager and the Lead RD and ask them about providing some level of proof to this site and answer the questions you have. If there is anything that sends up a red flag, I'll be open with you about it. But everything ive had verified does check out. I do know Dr P doesnt perform alot of them at MUSC bc of the high responsibility on the patient's part. He told my husband directly, and listed in his dictated office notes, that he wouldn't have offered him the DS had I not had the in-depth research and understanding about it.

Best proof that can be provided is a copy of an operative report. You can share it with me privately. Honestly, you need a copy anyway. Esp if you move or something happens to your surgeon or you need health care while traveling.

Alfredo D Guerron Cruz (goes by Guerron) is part of Duke center for Metabolic and Weight Loss Surgery in Durham NC. He also supervises residents and fellows, and participates in research. In 2017 at least he prefers nonstandard CC lengths (200-300) with an otherwise standard DS. He is open to perform a shorter CC length with discussion. He also performs other bariatric surgeries, as well as general surgery.

hi Everyone,
