For some reason, this has been a key date in my life.
  • 44 years ago today, my maternal grandmother passed away. She and my grandfather lived in the duplex we owned, so she helped raise me (and undermine my tight-ass mother's discipline, which my mother learned from - her). I was 16, and my mother didn't tell me she was dying - I knew she was in the hospital, but I didn't see her for the last few weeks of her life - I assumed she was coming home. After the funeral arrangements were made in the morning, my father (my father!?!) took me shopping for my prom dress (prom was on Valentine's Day), which was one of the best clothes shopping days I've ever had, because it WASN'T with my mom. It was one of the weirdest days of my life.
  • 29 years ago today, I conceived my son.
  • 16 years ago today, I met my husband, after meeting him on line two days before (and we were engaged 36 hours later).
I just got home from our anniversary dinner at McCormick & Schmick's. We split a bottle of rose champagne; I had a 1/2 dozen oysters, one of Charles' giant prawns, half a lobster bisque, a little orzo and butternut squash with my lobster tail, and we split a piece of bourbon pecan pie with ice cream and an espresso.

Before we left the house, my husband made a speech about us needing to shake things up a bit, since we got in a bit of a rut over the last year, with me spending a month back east last March; the kids living with us for 5 months; his knee surgery and rehab from it; and the last part of my stalker lawsuit. We've been working on it a little - in December, we went to a nightclub that was playing Sinatra and Rat Pack music, and I dragged him onto the dance floor a couple of times, which he NEVER wants to do. For Xmas, I bought him a fedora. We just got back from an 11 day trip to VA (mostly for my work) and 4 days in NYC (where we went to shows, and visited with friends and museums every day and night). And my anniversary present to us today was ballroom dancing lessons (!?!?!). I thought he might do the whole eyeroll thing and shoot it down - but, he gathered himself, and said yeah, that might be fun. YAY!

We both might need steel-toed dancing shoes, however ... :)

It was a crazy leap of faith - he told me he was going to marry me, at which point I said - "Really? Can I ask what my last name would be?" That subject had not yet come up. Imagine my surprise to learn that it was the same last name as my high school boyfriend's (the one I went to prom with), and which I had practiced writing as my own when I was 16.

what a romantic story!

That is sooo friggen cool!!!!! It's like you wrote your own fate <3 I love a great love story! :)

It's actually even weirder. I stayed friends with my HS boyfriend Bob (and introduced him to his current wife 30+ years ago). I also stayed friends with my college BF Tim; when I met Charles, I told Tim I was getting married, and mentioned the name thing (because he knew I was also still friends with Bob), and there was a long pause - and Tim said "In the 30 years we've known each other, has the subject of my MOTHER'S maiden name ever come up?" Yes, he was a Cox too. I've done some genealogy trying to see if the three of them have common ancestors, but never found a connection. But I still think that the whole thing is pretty weird.
