The Different types of Protein Powder.

It seems like people actually believe the 5g protein on the Nutritional Info label for this product actually is equal to the 25g of protein in WPI. I'm sorry - I'm not buying that.

Their claims actually have some truth to them.

(DISCLAIMER! I do not use this nor would I consider using this as a bariatric patient to meet daily protein needs)

Here is a simplified description of how protein works in the body:

Protein we eat (either supplement or whole food) consists of amino acids in long chains. Digestion breaks these chains down into the specific amino acids which are usable to our bodies for either muscle building or conversion to glucose for immediate energy use.

The product you listed actually (claims to) breaks down the protein into those simplified amino acids necessary for MUSCLE GROWTH. The down side of this product for our use is that the whole protein we consume (either whey supplement or whole foods) contributes to our satiety. Additionally, there are other beneficial amino acids that are left out of this formula that probably contribute to hair and skin health, hemoglobin production and other essential body systems.

Bottom line seems to be, if you were a normal digestive person wanting to be a body builder, this might be a good supplement to ADD to a healthy diet to gain the extra amino acids you need to build bigger muscles. As a DS patient who is concerned about maintaining the muscle mass they already have (along with their hair) and curbing hunger I would stick to whole food or whey isolate powder and steer clear of this product.

It is made for a specific target consumer but not us.

Following. I want to try the ON.

Any thoughts on unjury? I know I had some ages ago but can't remember if I liked them.

Got some of the premier RTD and found them pretty gross :(

Some people like them, some don't. I liked the chocolate and placing it in the freezer for about 30-45 mins made it more like a milk shake. I don't like the other flavors. But after a few years,, I am tired of the "milky" taste. So now I am trying the Isopure...grape frost was okay, apple melon was pretty good, have the blue raspberry to try next.

Thanks @southernlady I will drink what I have left when I start full liquids on Tuesday but find it has a weird after taste to me. I prefer the chocolate rich kind of stuff than the fruity as I like them for the morning on my way out the door but will try the ones you suggested for during the day.

@VDLT I tried and liked the ON (for about 3 1/2 tubs). All of a sudden, my taste buds said NO...thankfully I had less than half a tub opened which I gave away but I also had an unopened tub...got it at Costco so I returned it to Costco, no questions asked. :) I could have returned the partially used tub but when I got it, I liked it and it wasn't fair to Costco to ask for a refund of that one JUST because my taste buds decided to go on strike.

I always preferred the chocolate ones but right now, I am finding the others better suited. And I don't use mine every day...I TRY to get all my protein from food. But I am also over 4.5 years out.

I find the Unjury Chicken Soup flavor quite pleasant. 21 g in 8 oz is easy peasy when I'm having a small stomach day.

i have the chocolate splendor unjury every morning with my meds. I actually make it with 4oz of half and half and 4 oz of water. I was using water preop and it is slightly ok - then post op used 1% milk, but recently evaluated carbs and found that as a place to cut. 4 oz half and half cost me less carbs. and tastes better.

I liked the vanilla Premier RTD as creamer in my coffee when I went back to drinking that post-op, I eased back into it- half coffee, half RTD. To me it was a pretty tasty way to get more in.. Unjury, didn't like any but the chicken soup.. They have an unflavored whey isolate, but NOW brand whey isolate is much less exp, esp in bigger tubs and is the same in taste to me.. I used a lot of unflavored mixed with stuff to boost protein. I liked Syntrax and my fav was BSN Syntha-6, they used to make a "lighter" version, I don't think they do anymore.. it was good though too. The Syntha-6 may be a bit higher cal than you want right now, but they were nice imo since they had a good protein and fat content=filled me up and stayed with me.. plus tasted great. Samples can be gotten for a LOT of these proteins from Nashua Nutrition- they individually baggie & label samples, pretty neat since some of these powders are crazy $.

Like you all said my taste for the Premier has changed and I actually like them now :dontknow:

I loved chocolate Premier Protein RTD and had it for breakfast for years. Then they changed the recipe at the same time they changed the package to the red twist off cap and I can't stand it now. Tastes chemical -- like a chocolate flavored Smartee. Who knows: maybe I too will like it after surgery. I now like Atkins RTD and Slim Fast HIGH PROTEIN RTD (hard to find the HP - try Walmart). I'm not stocking up on any of that, though, as who knows what my tastes will be.

I went into a kind of shark frenzy ordering protein powder samples. (Yes, most companies have samples for postage.) I ended up with a boat load of Chike samples. Haven't tried any but they smell really good -- they should, as they have 12+gm of carbs for crissakes, one flavor has 20 gm of carbs per serving. This IMO runs afoul of the international rules of protein powder manufacture. It's supposed to taste like a milkshake, not actually BE a milkshake. The lesson: READ LABELS.

Depends.

Which is what you may need if you get the same reaction many of us do to fake sugars that end with "-itol" - unless you are Munchkin who is deliberately eating them as a sort of laxative. ::shudder::
ROFL!!!!
Some people have problems with them and others don't. Don't eat too much. Pay attention to the serving size indicated and stay home the first time you try them!

I can't recall exactly what form it was that I ate some xylitol- or sorbitol-sweetened product - perhaps gum or mints? - so not a huge amount, but whereas I love onion rings so much that I'm willing to try from time to time to see whether my guts' over-the-top reaction to them might have settled down yet, I prefer to just avoid all "-itols" at all. The gas pain was nearly enough to send me to urgent care.
