The Different types of Protein Powder.

Drat! I read somewhere that Casein protein was better at building/keeping muscle mass than whey protein. I guess I'll have to experiment after surgery to see if I've become lactose intolerant, and use whey if I am. Now pre op I drink those soy based EAS AdvantEdge premixed shakes. Bit sweet but pretty good.

If you are okay with it, tummy wise, it will be good for later at night. I just try to not have much of anything before bed so that I can take my iron, copper and vitamin C, then a couple hours later my thyroid medicine then, when I wake my Prevacid, 1 hour before my protein shake. All of these have to be taken separately and on an empty stomach.

Casein Protein Powder
Casein protein is found in cow's milk and takes longer to digest and to be absorbed into the muscle tissues. Casein protein also helps prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue. Since casein protein takes longer to digest, shakes made with casein can be used as a meal replacement or consumed before going to bed. Muscle tissue repairs occur during sleep, according to the book "Nutrition Concepts and Controversies." This makes casein protein an ideal choice for athletes at the end of the day.
 
Thanks Newanatomy. I know there's a vitamin area here, but I know you've recently undergone the DS. Would you mind listing all the vitamins you take daily? Also, was the prevacid for GERD ordered for you post op to aid in healing...or did you have a pre existing GERD problem? Just curious!

I was having some trouble with my tummy pre-op. My Primary care doc is prescribing the PPI now. I take the Vitalady list of vitamins except I am not taking the B complex, half the A and half the Zinc. Plus, I am taking 10,000 mcg biotin, daily(my hair is still coming out in droves). Miralax, 4 stool softeners and a quadruple dose of Magnesium oxide (all for constipation). I also take 2 different probiotics a day and a fiber supplement with a prebiotic in it. I also added some K 2.

So, this is what I take, it does change some and I will adjust for labs:

Morning:
1 Calcium citrate 500 mg with a 52 grams of protein shake.
Noon/Lunch:
2 Biotin 5000 mcg
1 Selenium 100 mcg
1 Vitamin A 25,000 IU
1 Vitamin B-12 5,000mct
1 Calcium citrate 400 mg
1 B Complex 50 (recommended by Vitalady but, not yet included)
1 Vitamin E 400 IU
1 Multi Vitamin
1 Zinc 50 mg
Evening/Dinner:
2 Stool softeners
1 Vitamin A 25,000 IU (2 are recommended by Vitalady)
1 Vitamin E 400 IU
1 Calcium Citrate 500 mg
1 Multivitamin
1 Vitamin D3 50,000 IU
1 vitamin B-9 Folic Acid 1,200 mcg
2 Magnesium Oxide 400 mg (800 mg elemental) (recommended for constipation)
Night/Bedtime:

2 Stool softeners

1 Vitamin A 25,000 IU (recommended by Vitalady but, not yet included)

1 Magnesium Citrate 200 mg (Vitalady recommends 280 mg total)
2 Magnesium Oxide 400 mg (800 mg elemental) (recommended for constipation)
1 Miralax dose (recommended for constipation)
During the night/On an empty stomach:

6 Perfect Iron 50 mg (300 mg elemental)
1 Copper 2mg
levothyroxine (for my thyroid)

I try a new brand of protein powder or pre mixed every once in a while but always come back to my old stand by. I suggest trying different flavors within a brand. I think the Body Fortress Vanilla and Choc-PEANUT Butter flavors are nasty, but really like the regular Chocolate and Strawberry flavors.
 
The various powders are overwhelming. I've tried a few brands and some were pretty good. I like premier. It's just not on my "clears" list but syntax is. (The NUT told me that) I want to find something that's as tasteless as possible to mix with my powerade zero. Any suggestions??? I'm just not into all the various flavors. I start my clears Friday for preop.

Powerade ZERO should be fine, I was cleared to drink that right after surgery during the clear liquids phase, it was one of the only things I could choke down at first without reflux. Regular powerade, gatorade, etc., have a ton of sugar, maybe that's what you're referring to?
 
For me, first thing every morning, its a chocolate Premier Protein (30g) ...but this one is NOT for the lactose intolerant!

They briefly had Strawberries & Creme flavor and it was truly yummy...buy it if you see it.

So many are lactose intolerant after surgery and I have never really "liked" milk. I just went ahead and bought unsweetened almond milk to make my shakes. I prefer the Premier Protein RTD ones. I guess I now know I am good if I want milk in the future.
 
Walmart carries Body Fortress Whey Isolate in Vanilla Crème, and it tastes really good. It mixes well, and has no protein smell or after taste. I am lactose intolerant, and it doesn't bother me. It is also cheap at $21 for 2 lbs. I mix a scoop into some almond milk and mix it up until smooth. Then I add some coffee, and a shot of sugar free chocolate syrup. Taste like a mocha and 30g of protein. I like the Syntrax powders the best but they are so damn expensive. This is a cheap alternative that is much better on my wallet. (130 calories, 1g carb, 1g fat, 30g protein, and 0 sugar per scoop)
Tabitha, vitacost has 2lb container of subtract powders for a little over $23 and free shipping on orders over $49. I do this cause I always order two. I don't want to get sick of one flavor so I alternate.
 
Soooooo, I need some protein powder advice if anyone can spare it. @Parousia - I'd especially value your input on what you use!

I have only found one source that ships one of the three most recommended protein whey isolates I've read about on this board to Australia. And they charge $75 shipping for two tubs of it. Most companies won't ship it as customs confiscates items that are more than 10% dairy, which whey isolate would clearly be. I imagine Vitamin Shoppe must have some kind of permit that allows them to do it, but no one else seems to. Vitalady says she'll ship to Australia, but no guarantees on shipping price, AND she says she'll check into what's allowed to be shipped before shipping it (naturally) - so she'll of course find she can't ship whey isolate powder to Australia, either.

So obviously I need to find a type that IS available directly in Australia. What are the most important qualities to look for in a protein powder? Whey isolate, zero carb (though so far we've only found some with 0.3 g carbs per serving), what else do I need to be keeping an eye out for? Any advice VERY appreciated!
 
Whey isolate is best, but if you can't find it, you can still do concentrate. And you don't need ZERO carb, just low. I think the one I use is 2 or 3 grams per serving. Also, there's debate about whether or not whey protein powder is considered dairy or not. I asked this question ages ago on PB and we couldn't come to a consensus.
 
I use ON Whey Protein Isolate. Get it at Costco. Was told by a doctor that WPI is the easiest absorbed. It is $50 for 5 lbs. They have sales. They had one last month $10 off so we got 15lbs. We go through 10lbs a month.
